Hurting Teeth

Saturday, January 11, 2014

Oh, teething… I thought that the front teeth were rough for poor Maddie, but these molars seem to be excruciating for her.  They popped through a while ago but they are really emerging through her gums now and I can only imagine how much it hurts.  The poor girl was fighting off another cold this week and we thought that was the reason she was upset, but then the cold went away and the drooling, boogers, whining and rosy cheeks still remained.  So, it has been a touch beginning to the new year.
We don't normally allow the pacifier during the day, but we made an exception this week.  Poor girl!
In addition to Maddie’s hurting teeth, I went in for some gum surgery this past week. It wasn’t as bad as I expected; I actually really like the dentist that performed the surgery a lot. But, when you expect the worst, the procedure being “not as bad” doesn’t mean it wasn’t horrifying.  It it just not pleasant having your front tooth yanked out, seeing a man come at you with a scalpel to remove part of your gums and then hearing the scraping of your bone underneath being shaved off and remolded so that your gum won’t grow back in that area.  Repeat on the underside of the tooth, then ask for more Novocain when the stitches are being put in because the earlier stuff has worn off.  So, I have been in some pain the past couple of days, but it’s not so bad anymore.  My mouth just feels strange, with little holes above and behind my tooth, and I have the constant taste of blood on my tongue.

Phil took such good care of me when I came back from the surgery. He took care of Maddie all night, even getting up to rock her back to sleep when it wasn’t his turn when she was crying from pain. He went to the store to buy me all kinds of yummy food and fetched me my pain meds and water whenever I needed them. We also had a surprise visit from our friend, Tricia, who made us homemade chicken noodle soup with noodles from scratch! How sweet! So many people called to check up on my and tell me they were praying and I am so grateful and feel so loved.
One of my favorite pictures.
Let’s see, other updates. Maddie has been talking like crazy! She has added so many new words to her vocabulary in the past couple of weeks including, but not limited to:  juice, milk, Bible, baby, okay, Titus (our cat), oh gosh, grandma (well, it was more like gamma), Nonna is “Noba" and grandpa is “gampu”, church, Cheese!, and her favorites are “Luka” (our dog), and “what”. There are many more that I can't think of.
Our silly 17-month-old
She is imitating everything I do.  She loves to pretend to talk on the phone and it makes me laugh so hard watching her tilt her head, move her other hand around when babbling and then saying, “What? Oh…. Hahahahaha!” Seriously? Is that what I sound like? She uses my makeup brushes to pretend to put on makeup, she brushes her hair and her teeth when I do, too.  Yesterday, I was cleaning the bathtub and she came in with a plastic toy, knelt down and started to scrub the floor with it. Just like Mama! Oh, and next time any of you are around, try taking a drink of water in front of her and see what she does when you take the glass away.  It’s so cute.  As soon as you are done, she exclaims  a refreshing, “Ah!” as if to say, “boy, that was good.”
It's been cold, but we still strap into the car and drive around the house.
We have found a new area in a nearby mall where we go to play now since the weather has been so crummy. Maddie loves to move and is so fast. She is sprinting all over the place and loves to climb up and go down the slide all by herself (with Mom at the bottom to catch her, of course), and she crawls through tunnels now, too.  At home, we are teaching her to dance, stomp her feet and raise her arms up in the air. No wonder she’s such a skinny mini: she is moving all the time!
Row, row, row your boat. At the mall playing.
Here's some pictures of Maddie playing in the snow. I was able to find her some snow pants so we can do it more often and now it's all melting.  :(

A Bible Memorization Update: I have officially finished Matthew 7, meaning that I have memorized the whole sermon on the mount (Matthew 5-7)! Thank you, Lord, for your faithfulness in giving me endurance to complete this task! I am thrilled and looking forward to picking a **shorter** passage to work on next.

Now,to go bake some yummy bread with the fabulous Bread Bible Cookbook that Phil bought me for Christmas.  I’ve made sourdough and english muffins from it recently.  What should I bake next? I’m thinking of a braided bread, maybe.  We shall see!
